University Scholarships

STATUS: begun September 2006 / ongoing

Funding university scholarships for top ranking students who cannot afford the cost, to develop Haiti’s professional class.

NEED: Haiti has the lowest school enrollment rate in the western hemisphere. Only 20% of eligible students attend secondary school and the graduation rate is only 5%. Many students who graduate at the top of their class come from highly disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot afford to continue on to university.

RESPONSE: Yéle Haiti sponsors 10 scholarships for University students in Haiti through a partnership with the Haitian Education and Leadership Program (HELP). HELP provides merit-based university scholarships to top performing high school graduates who could not otherwise afford university education. HELP scholarships include tuition, books, food and transportation. The HELP academic center gives students access to a computer lab, library, study hall, guest speakers, academic counseling, as well as internship and job placement support.
