Projects:
School RebuildingSTATUS: implemented January to December 2005 / now completed Repairing and upgrading 20 schools in the Gonaives area that were damaged by tropical storm Jeanne in 2004 (partial funding from USAID). NEED: Hurricane Jeanne brought unprecedented devastation and the world’s attention to Haiti in Sept 2004. Over 3,000 people died as a result of flash floods and mudslides, exacerbated by the diminished amount of forest cover that could have buffered the swells. The storm left 300,000 already impoverished people without food, water or electricity. Buildings throughout Gonaives were heavily damaged or destroyed completely. RESPONSE: Yéle Haiti, working in conjunction with funding from Voila and USAID and executed by PADF, repaired, rebuilt and upgraded 20 flood damaged schools in Gonaives. Local contractors were hired, creating jobs and much needed income for the community. The work done gave the community a sense of support with the attached focus on continuing to improve educational conditions for Haitian children.
