Projects:

Help Haiti

STATUS: launched May 2005 / ongoing

Students in Canada, are giving 25¢ each in order to provide tuition for Haitian students through Yéle’s annual Help Haiti annual campaign each May and June.

NEED: There are up to one million children out of school in Haiti. The government can not afford to sponsor public schools, so unfortunately 95 percent of parents in Haiti have to pay tuition for their children. Work is scarce and unemployment high, so many families just can not afford to pay the necessary fees.

RESPONSE: The Help Haiti campaign was launched in 2005 when seven schools in Alberta, Canada, participated and enough funds were raised to put 20 children in school in Haiti. The campaign has continued to grow and a total of 123 schools throughout Alberta- plus one each from British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec - have contributed over the last four years.  The 2008 collection was enough to pay tuition for 345 children to school in Haiti for the 2008/2009 academic year. This year's collection is for the school year beginning September 2009, and the campaign of "students helping students" is expanding beyond Alberta to involve the rest of Canada with participation remaining the same - 25 cents from each student. This program is part of  Yéle’s Primary School Scholarships project.

2009 HELP HAITI CAMPAIGN: Throughout the month of May and June 2009,  students across Canada are invited to take part by giving 25 cent each. Students in the US who want to take part are also welcome. Details for participation, including the form to use when depositing the quarters, can be downloaded here:
