Computer Lab

STATUS: launched December 2007 / ongoing

Installing computers in a high school in Croix-des-Bouquets.

NEED: In Haiti, 65% of the population has no level of education; 25% have a level equivalent to 4 years of primary education; 10% have a higher level. One third of school-age children cannot go to school because their parents are too poor, and sadly less than 30% of the children going into first grade will be admitted to seventh grade. Since almost all schools in Haiti are private, there are very low standards - many schools are just a one room hut. Students have very little access if any to computers and modern technologies.

RESPONSE: Yéle Haiti has equipped a new state-of-the-art full computer center at a high school in Croix-des-Bouquets. The project is a partnership between the Happy Hearts Fund, Teens for Technology and the alumni association of the school -Lycée Jacques 1er. The computer lab is giving young people the opportunity to learn about computers - specifically they are being trained in basic programs like Microsoft Word and Excel and are learning how to use the internet. They are also learning about computer maintenance and repair, which are important job skills.
